At Copper Hills Youth Center, we value every young man who enters our doors as a unique individual with something special to contribute to society. We believe that every resident can be successful and our program offers a positive setting that stresses working together and taking responsibility for actions.
In our residential treatment program for boys ages 12-17, Copper Hills provides 24-hour supervision in a safe setting. The boys in our residential program have a psychiatric disorder, such as anxiety problems, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression, and have generally failed outpatient therapies or other attempts to recover.
We customize treatment plans based on an evaluation given during admission to diagnose problems. Each resident receives individual and group therapy, medication management, recreational therapy and an education that meets school requirements and ties in with therapy.
Track A & Track B
Not all boys learn or progress in the same way, which is why we provide separate units to allow boys to learn in a way that is geared toward their needs. We refer to these units as Track A & Track B.
Both tracks allow boys to advance to upper levels and include a positive setting, group meetings and correction of thinking errors.
Progressive Level System
Residents are provided with a structured environment guided by a progressive levels and points system. Clear expectations are established, along with privileges and rewards for good behavior. While most residents don’t like the highly-structured environment at first, they are able to track their progress and change accordingly. Boys are also regularly evaluated throughout treatment to identify any problem areas.
Positive Peer Culture
At Copper Hills, we understand the importance of having peers support and encourage you, and we try to maintain such an environment here. We believe that the involvement of peers (fellow residents), along with Copper Hills staff, contributes to learning, guidance and positive change. Peers are often able to see and address problems with thinking and behavior in a way that adults can’t, allowing children to change their behavior when needed.
Group Meetings
Our programming provides a series of groups that are divided into four categories:
-
Skill-development groups, including:
- Anger management
- Victim awareness
- Impulse control
- Values education and moral reasoning training
- Problem-solving training
- Social-thinking skills for adolescents
- Refusal skills
- Cognitive Restructuring
- Communication skills
- Money management
- Daily-living skills
- Stress management
- Helping groups are structured daily meetings conducted by a mentor resident. Community issues, level advancements and problems are discussed in these groups.
- Group therapy is held on a weekly basis and conducted by a licensed therapist. These groups focus on treatment issues.
- Chemical dependency groups are conducted on a weekly basis for those residents who have substance abuse problems. All residents are required to attend weekly chemical education classes, even if they have not been diagnosed with a substance abuse problem.
These groups are designed to accelerate treatment and help the resident to be a productive and contributing member of their community.
We believe that all boys are able to succeed in a supportive learning environment. We focus attention on bettering the life of each resident by demonstrating teamwork, respect, honesty, accountability and patience.
