We are an in-patient, 24-hour, Residential Treatment Center.

Male and female adolescents (ages 12–17), who have been diagnosed with psychiatric illness.

5899 W. Rivendell Dr., West Jordan, Utah 84081 (We are located 17 miles SW of Salt Lake City International Airport.)

Copper Hills treats adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age. We are able to provide treatment through their 17th year until the day before they turn 18.

The adolescent must be between the ages of 12 and 17. We are able to provide treatment for adolescents through their 17th year until the day before they turn 18.

The adolescent has been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, has failed outpatient therapies and is currently exhibiting behaviors such as, but not limited to:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychotic symptoms
  • Severe mood swings
  • Extreme oppositional or defiant responses to peers and/or parents
  • Explosiveness or uncontrolled rages of anger
  • Evidence of substance use or dependency
  • Self-harming
  • Suicidal ideations, threats or attempts
  • Inability to control aggressiveness, cruelty and physical acting out
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Runaway behaviors
  • Self-destructive behaviors
  • Destruction of property
  • Lying, covert behavior, stealing
  • Evidence of ritualistic behaviors

Patients must exhibit signs of primary mental illness and possess an IQ of 70 or above.

While our residential treatment center is well-suited to the needs of adolescents with a dual diagnosis some factors may exclude a youth from admission, including:

  • Actively suicidal and/or homicidal, requiring acute hospitalization.
  • Unstable medical conditions that might do irreversible damage to the patient, which requires intensive medical management.
  • Actively psychotic or severely disorganized thought processes requiring stabilization, which precludes residential care.
  • Severe organic brain disorders and non-ambulatory individuals.
  • A: Individual, group and family therapy
    • One hour per week individual; one hour per week family therapy; two or more hours of group therapy
  • Family therapy sessions can take place using secure video conferencing.
  • Individualized treatment plans
    • Treatment team meets every 30 days to review resident’s progress and make appropriate modifications.
  • Psychoeducation groups
    • Designed to focus on educating residents about their disorders and to suggest ways of coping. Based on the principles of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).
  • Medical model with 24-hour nursing care
  • Trauma-informed therapy
    • Trauma-informed therapy creates a safe environment that empowers youth to find healing and to change the way their emotional struggles and challenges impact them today.
  • Medication management
  • Age and gender-specific clinical programming
  • Culturally sensitive treatment
  • Recreation therapy
    • Recreation therapists use recreational activities to help improve or maintain an individual’s cognitive, emotional, social or physical functioning.
  • Art and expressive therapy
    • Expressive arts therapy is the practice of using imagery, storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement, horticulture, dreamwork and visual arts together in an integrated way to foster human growth, development and healing.
  • Extensive discharge planning
  • On-campus education
  • Year-round school

  • Recent high-risk behavior or severely impaired judgement
  • Failure to progress in an out-patient therapy setting
  • Emotional and/or behavioral problems requiring 24-hour care or supervision

The average length of stay in our male and female behavioral programs is 6 to 8 months. The average length of stay in our Autism Spectrum Disorder Program is 12 months.

Yes, we do offer substance use treatment if part of a dual diagnosis. Copper Hills Youth Center is committed to helping residents who struggle with substance use and addiction increase their awareness and coping skills to maintain a sober and healthy life.

Yes, youth with sexually acting out behavior would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Yes, we have a specialty program for Autism. Our Autism Spectrum Disorder program is for males only. The staff and therapists of the Arches program work with each resident, focusing on individual needs and abilities necessary for improvement and progress with the goal of returning home. The goals of the Arches program are to:

  • Increase functional independence
  • Facilitate development and learning
  • Improve socialization
  • Enhance communication
  • Replace maladaptive behaviors
  • Educate and support families
